What is a surveyor?: A surveyor is one who has the ability to use mathematics as a means to visualize objects, measure distances, sizes and other abstract forms. They have to work with precision and accuracy because mistakes can be costly. Surveying is a cooperative process, therefore strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team is important. Entry level surveyors will learn and acquire leadership abilities that are important for the party chief and other supervisory positions. What is Surveying?: A surveyor will determine the proper location of property lines and perform various field and construction survey work. A survey crew will make accurate field measurements, will utilize equipment such as global positioning systems and other high tech equipment to determine the topography of the surface of the earth. This information will be used to design various types of public work projects as well as private construction projects. The work of a surveyor is to measure elevation and distance for preparation of topographic maps showing characteristics of the land surface, boundaries of tracts of land and prepare legal descriptions of property. A surveyor may also perform triangulation, mineral, railroad, pipeline, tunnels, high-rise structures and heavy or light construction surveys. Most work is outdoors, often requiring commuting to distant job sites. Occupational hazards expose you to sunburn, poison oak, natural wildlife, heavy construction equipment and falling objects. Program: During the term of the apprenticeship you will work 1000 hours on the job through the duration of each eight periods of training with various employers. You will be required to attend supplemental related training classes 144 hours per year at one of several locations throughout Northern California as well as supplemental hands-on training classes.
